Beat Writers Block

The most common problem amongst writers? Writer’s block! Writer’s block is described as everything from the work of the divine to a medical condition. So what is writer’s block? How do we get Writer’s block? How do I beat writer’s block and most importantly how do I avoid writer’s block?

Writer’s Block is a Myth

Writer’s block is a myth, a label for a society in love with labels. Even in the depths of supposed writer’s block I could get 10 words out of any of you! All I’d need would be a hot poker (grins evilly) Point I’m trying to make is with the right motivation writer’s block would be a thing of the past. If I asked you, while you languished in the pits of writer’s block hell, to write about the history of your cat or importance of understanding the offside rule or why Friends was the greatest cultural event of the 90’s I bet your cup would be overflowing. These are subjects that you know inside out and the words would likely pour forth from you like one liners from Chandler.

Making meaning the hanger for your words

Writer’s block is an incorrect way of describing an imbalance in your life. You’ve got too many words and too little life. Words are the ornamentation on the outside of story, character, plot and meaning. If you don’t have those nice things to hang your words on they’ll all sound tinny and meaningless. You’ll doubt your words and blame writer’s block your pet cat and the guy down at supermarket who keeps ending his sentence with a preposition. It’s not the writing that’s blocked, it’s your fuel line that’s run dry. All the words are their and you can still slap them round to suit your needs, but it’s your needs that are missing. Most often I find that when the words stop coming it’s time to retire my topic and go out and do… anything. When you believe in a project the words will find themselves. When you spend time living you bring balance. It’s important to remember that you are at once writer and human being. Feed your humanity and the words will grow as you grow yourself. Try new things, read, write talk, drink have fun be miserable.

I get that writers block sometimes, well if you call it that :) When I have no more words coming out sometimes I will just sit back in silence, close my eyes and let my mind wander. Then before you know it something might come to mind. Other times if I am at a loss for words with a post I will go out and read some blogs. Doing this almost always makes me think of an idea for a post. Ideas though can come from anywhere and can be right under your nose. Sometimes trying not to think so hard can help.

I’ve always believed creativity is the ultimate organic pursuit. It can’t be rushed or coaxed. It happens precisely as it is meant to happen. When the words stop coming, I stop writing, clearly I’ve reached an imbalance in my life which needs to be addressed before I can continue. I actually just finished a guest post on The shackled muse about Treating your muse like your girlfriend which is just some tips i follow to try and keep the block at bay.
