Be the Lighthouse not the ship: Attract the Power of Positivity

October 12, 2009
By Michael Fletcher

lighthouse Life is often seen as a journey, a long voyage through troubled seas. I disagree life is a a function of the company we keep. Every day our seas are ravaged by storms of adversity and strife. Many of us are caught in amongst swells being thrown about and generally feeling out of control of our vessels and our journey’s.

How do we arrest this and bring our lives under control? Simple, realize that this is just a metaphor, you don’t have to be the boat. Your life need not be out of control and better still you can make it your job to save more vessels in distress.

Take Charge

As an individual you have every opportunity to take charge of your life. You can organize better, you can apply yourself to your goals, you can take control of your time and your life. Evidence? Have a look around at all the success stories around you. These stories are the lighthouses for ships in distress. There is nothing special about those who took control of their time, they are not super human. When you start moving into the light, the light also moves into you (to mangle some philosophy) When as an individual you exhibit the behaviors you value, others start seeing the value in you.

The Power of Synergy

As individuals there are limits to what we can achieve. Our flesh and our bones and the power of our will are finite limits to our abilities. Truly great events in human history have been the result of the mobilization of groups of teams and of nations. Civilizations built, space explored, human flight achieved and who knows what else in the future. Great strides are typically made by immense teams. This is our legacy and if we wish to leave a legacy of note we must do the same.

Synergy Starts with You

Even if you are adrift at the moment, now is the time to start looking around and sizing up your allies. When you become a lighthouse you start attracting ships. If we are to achieve lasting results we must begin to leverage the opportunities provided by synergy. We must work harder to save others and we will find our own lot improve.

It takes a Village to Synergize

This advice is as relevant to bloggers as it is to teachers parents or scientists. Too many people are trying to do it all themselves. If we want to succeed we need a village, a community a team. There is definite need for us to become less insular. A big part of this mentality is caused by fear. We fear that when we give we take from ourselves. We lower our own chance to succeed. Synergy is bigger than that thinking. Synergy is about uplifting ourselves by giving. Sounds foreign, doesn’t it? When we give to others, when we share our light and steady the ships of others we build fleets each vessel carrying cargo of knowledge experience and creativity we never had before. When we begin casting our light and allow others to cast theirs we start making the water safer for others.

People are often attracted to those who seem to be in control. If you can show that you are in control of your life and your business, people respect that and will naturally be drawn to you. Then you can synergize them. :)

    Michael,

I like your perspective. Reminds me of a famous quote “You have to do it on your own, but you can’t do it by yourself.” It’s up to the person to make the decision to guide their life. Beyond that they need the assistance of others. Giving before taking is the way to do this. Everybody loves a giver.

In the past I prefer to work my way alone and I learned the hard way. I realized that no man is an island, that everybody needs somebody. Synergy is a necessity of life and now I understood.

    Excellent wake-up post. :-)

  4. Thanks for that Gordie, indeed the world needs more people in control of their lives. Only when you choose to free yourself from the choppy water and take up some firm ground can you become a mark for others to move toward. The best way to win the hearts and minds of others has always been to give freely.

  5. Giving without expectation is fundamental to living a more fulfilled life, I believe firmly that the world is a a place of infinite abundance and only when we free our mind from defining what we value by money but by the only finite resource we have, time can we truly realize our potential and set loose the potential of those around us. The past does not exist neither the future we have only the time that we use.

  6. :) Thanks Walter, this lesson is probably the one I struggle most with, it is very easy for me to give but I struggle a lot with recieving and worse still asking for help. It reminds me of a saying I heard once that went something along the lines of how peculiar it is that the most common human feeling is that of lonliness. Why is it so common? It’s the only human problem that cannot be solved on your own. Now if only we could open our eyes up and start seeing the opportunities to help others who are currently standing on their own.
